The purpose of a fire alarm system is to bring attention to a fire at the earliest opportunity, so that the building can be evacuated.

When smoke or heat is detected by one of the sensors, this sends a signal to the fire system and the alarm sound is activated. Depending on the type of fire alarm system installed, the sounding of the alarm may trigger the automatic closing of any fire doors and send an alert to the fire brigade.
